Women's Skirts: The complete buying guide

Author of this post - Sanskriti Kapoor

Skirts come in a wide variety of lengths and types. This comprehensive guide explains the differences and how to wear them. As with all apparel, skirts can be made in a variety of different fabrics -- which typically determines if the skirt is casual, professional, or suitable for evening wear.

Find the right print – be it floral, abstract or animal – and the printed skirt can become a regular in your wardrobe. Surprisingly versatile, it can be matched with a complementary colour, downplayed with more muted tailoring or, for the real fashion-approved interpretation, contrasted with a different print on top.

Renting is a way to take advantage of the imaginative prints produced by high-end designers without committing to price tags. Dig into rich florals or try brands that made their name with prints, such as Pucci.

Print is a genre that vintage excels at – retro prints are all the rage this season. Look for bold florals, classic paisleys and curios from the 80s. But take your time to look: it’s worth shopping around for a retro print that fits your personal style. Finally, combine with something minimal and modern to bring it into the 21st century.

Short Skirt Styles

Nothing showcases a great pair of legs like a short skirt. These hit above the knee, but they still come in several shapes and fabrics to suit almost any occasion (except maybe school or work).

Mini-skirt

The term mini-skirt is used to describe skirts with hemlines that are well above the knee, often halfway up the thigh. This skirt was popularized in the "Swinging Sixties," with designer Mary Quant and model Jean Shrimpton bringing the style into prominence.
Mini-skirts can be paired with a variety of different tops, depending on the situation and one's personal style. For a night out with friends, a tighter, more fitted top would be appropriate; for a more casual day out, it would be best to wear a more conservative top - long sleeved, with a looser fit - to balance out the shortness of the skirt.
The mini-skirt is best worn by younger women with either an apple-shaped body type or boyish shape.
To pull off the mini-skirt style in a more modest way, pair the skirt with leggings or tights for a stylish look that doesn't show extra skin.

Skater Skirt

Also known as a circle skirt, the skater skirt is a casual skirt with a waistband that sits at one's true waist and is flared so that it will form a circle when laid flat. Because of the way the skirt is cut, it often falls in an a-line shape.
This casual skirt is extremely versatile and can be paired with fitted tops to contrast with the flared shape or even looser tops tucked into the waistband. It has become trendy to wear skater skirts with a fitted cropped top, showing off a sliver of skin.
The skater skirt comes in a variety of lengths, and is universally flattering for all body types.
Longer skater skirts can be worn by women of all ages; shorter skater skirts should be worn by younger women.

Skort

Also known as a scooter skirt, a skort is a combination of shorts and a skirt. It is usually designed as a pair of shorts with a piece of fabric over them, to give the appearance of a skirt. This style was particularly popular in the 90s, when they were knee-length and were most frequently paired with a polo t-shirt. The skort has seen a recent revival in more recent spnigs and summers with the popularization of Zara's modern version. It has a mid-thigh length, with the "skirt" having an asymmetric hem.
This style is suited for women with an active lifestyle - it has the style of a skirt but the ease of a pair of shorts, and is to be worn only in the daytime and for more casual occasions.
A more modern way of wearing this style is with a loose t-shirt or a cable-knit sweater.
This style suits all body types.

Bubble Hem

The bubble hem skirt puffs out at the bottom due to the hem being tucked back under, resulting in a voluminous style. This skirt was originally popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but has since experienced a resurgence in popularity after being seen on the runways. While its original style was short, it is also now seen in longer lengths.
This skirt is best worn with a fitted top to balance out the rounded shape of the skirt.
This style is best suited for younger women who have apple-shaped body types.

Knee-Length Styles

Knee-length styles are versatile enough to be casual, work-friendly, and also work in more formal settings. As the name suggests, these are a modest length without being too long.

Bell-Shaped

The bell-shaped skirt, as the name implies, resembles a bell in that the skirt flares from the waist but falls in a straight line to the knee from that initial flare. It is typically made from heavier fabrics that hold their shape well. The most famous proponent of the bell-shaped skirt is Jackie Kennedy, who frequently wore dresses with bell-shaped skirts to glamorous effect.
This skirt is best worn in the evening at formal occasions, with a fitted top.
It is best worn by apple-shaped ladies.

Full

The full, knee-length skirt is flattering for all women. The waistband of a full skirt typically cinches at one's true waist, the smallest part of a woman's body, with the rest of the skirt falling to the knee.
Its conservative length makes it extremely versatile - depending on the fabric and the print, it can be worn to work and to religious and family occasions, and even to formal evening events if made in a fabric like jacquard or lace.
The best way to wear a full skirt is with a fitted top tucked into the waistband in order to highlight the nipped-in waist.
This skirt can be worn by ladies of all ages and body shapes.

Pleated

Traditionally associated with private school uniforms, the pleated skirt has become ubiquitous in recent years. The effect varies based on size of the pleats. For example, thicker pleats are more reminiscent of schoolgirl days, whereas thinner pleats are more contemporary and on-trend. The pleated skirt can come in a variety of lengths - mid-thigh (mini), knee-length, calf-length (midi), and even maxi. A more modern take on the skirt is using fabrics like leather or chiffon, as opposed to the more traditional wool-blend.
This type of skirt is best worn with a top tucked into the waistband.
Pleated skirts can be worn by women of all body types and shapes.

A-Line

The A-Line skirt, when laid flat, forms a triangle shape where the skirt flares out gently from the waistband.
The A-line skirt is traditionally knee-length, making it an appropriate choice for most occasions.
This style is perfect for pear-shaped ladies as it emphasizes the waist and does not cling to the hips.

Pencil

The pencil skirt is a staple for many professional women closet - and rightly so. This style is cut straight down, and when laid flat, forms a rectangle.
Often paired with a suit jacket, the pencil skirt is best worn in professional environments. A pencil skirt in a suiting fabric is appropriate for business formal dressing, and an appropriate top would be a formal button-down shirt or a silk shell to be worn under a suit jacket.
Retailers like J.Crew have started making pencil skirts in a variety of fabrics, including colorful wools, printed cotton blends, and heavier jacquard prints. These skirts are better suited for business casual environments and, in the case of the heavier jacquard fabrics, at nighttime professional events. In these situations, a loose silk top or a sweater in a complementary color would work best.
Women of all body types and all ages, with the exception of pear-shaped figures who might find it challenging to find a well-fitting pencil skirt, can wear the pencil skirt.

Having discussed the various types of skirts available in the market for purchase, let us understand the following -

How to buy the right Skirt for each Occasion

  • Workwear: Your skirt should be long enough to say “business”. That means: knee-length or slightly above the knee. Some companies have their own rules for skirt length, so check them out before you start buying clothes for a new job.
Best are classic cuts, e.g. a pencil skirt. They are flattering on almost everyone.  For pear shaped woman, a slight a line skirt that does not follow the hipline is also a great option.
When wearing a thin fabric, makes sure it is not see through. Go into a very light place and ask a friend or your partner (you will most probably not see it in a dark room).
If the skirt has a slit in the back, ensure the slit does not show your upper thighs or even more.
  • Casual: Skirts are the feminine alternative to trousers – even with casual wear. You can even get skirts in jersey!
  • Special occasion (date, dinners, holiday parties):  Lace, silk.. anything goes! Just make sure the style is appropriate for your body shape.

Choose the right Fabric

You can buy skirts in a huge variety of fabrics: twill, silk, linen, wool, cotton, cashmere, viscose, polyester and gabardine.

Softer fabrics will hug the hipline – some bodytypes (pear!) should be careful with that.

Find your skirt style

  • Skirts that fall just above the knees are flattering on most women and easy to style. With a knee-length skirt you can wear heels, boots or flats.
  •  Long skirts are a great opportunity to wear your flat shoes (as long as the skirt is long enough). Long skirts can be dressy as well as a great garment for the beach. Just make sure it has a slit so you can walk in it.
  •  Short skirts are for beachwear, casual wear and party wear. Some people say you should not wear mini skirts after a certain age. But there is no need to adhere to that as long as you have beautiful slender legs and do not show much skin on other parts of your body (big cleavage and mini skirt is a no go!).
Vast Selection

With so many styles to choose among, there are plenty of skirt options to suit everyone. No matter what your taste or body style - or the type of occasion you are dressing for - there's a skirt that will meet your needs.

Women's Scarf: The complete buying guide

Author of this post - Sanskriti Kapoor

You’ve put together a stunner of an outfit and are ready to show the world your style. You’re on your way out, but one last look in the mirror and you realize something’s missing: your ensemble could do with a touch more colour and texture. Say hello to scarves, those ingenious accessories that can do wonders to instantly ramp up your look. Maybe you could use a luxurious polka dot silk number that immediately puts the fun back into formal wear, or a funky geometric printed one that your friends will absolutely envy. Whatever your style is, scarves can take you from blah to fab in a snap. Find out what’s trending and how to make every outfit rock with these mini marvels.

Best Scarves for Summers

Come summer and there’s nothing better than slipping into light, breathable clothes that keep you cool. Scarves of the sheer, gauzy variety are what you need to accessorise summery ensembles. This means cotton, chiffon, and other cooling fabrics. You can go wild with colours and prints as well as with embellishments and embroidery. We’re partial to scarves with funky prints and short knotted numbers that easily put the zing back into everyday outfits.

Chiffon

Who can say no to chiffon? The gorgeous fabric is a designer’s dream, which means you can get your hands on numerous fabulous creations without any trouble. This easy-to-maintain fabric works great with both casual and formal attire. You can pick a multi-coloured chiffon scarf to wear with a solid black shirt and a pair of cream trousers for an office look that blends professionalism and fun. Knot it around your neck, leaving the ends loose to casually fall over one shoulder. The splash of colour will get rid of any drabness that office wear can sometimes have.

Cotton

Cotton scarves are must-haves, especially if you live in warm regions. They keep you cool, last long, and come in many colours and designs. Pastel colours, ombre styles, and delicate prints are our favourites. They look amazing with Western and ethnic casual wear like T-shirts and kurtis. Loop a lovely cotton scarf around your neck to pep up a neutral-toned khadi top and a pair of skinny jeans. Give the outfit even more desi flavour with a pair of mojris and silver jhumka earrings. Slinky cat-eye liner and a loose bun will add the right amount of sexiness that your date will find irresistible!

There are a few reasons why they are so widely popular and equally important to own. Cotton, as a fabric, is a warm-weather favorite. It keeps pesky sweat at bay and allows your body to breathe free.

  • Not only will a cotton scarf shield you from the sun, but it will also add a touch of effortlessness to your outfit. Regardless of what color or pattern you choose, these scarves are extremely versatile and the question of ‘how to wear a scarf’ doesn’t arise at all with them.
  • You can choose to pair them with a dress, a shirt, a t-shirt or pretty much anything you want for casual outings or daytime events. Go in with no holds barred, and you’ll see how cotton scarves transform your look into something that deserves to be on your Instagram feed stat!

Linen

If there’s one ace summer fabric, it’s linen. Very breathable and cooling, it looks gorgeous on everyone. Choose a linen scarf in a vivid colour such as red or orange and drape it around your neck to bring alive white tops and grey shirts. For a formal affair, we suggest going for a two-toned scarf with a striking border, or a printed scarf in rich colours. Guys can prepare to look utterly dapper when pairing one with a grey suit and a black overcoat. Ladies can look just as stylish and show off their new buy with a boat-neck top and lightly printed palazzos. For a formal look, slip into slim-fit trousers and a smart jacket.

Best Scarves for Winter

You may think it isn’t worth the bother of having separate scarves for summer and winter, but trust us when we say it is! Fabrics like cotton, chiffon, and linen are cool to the touch, which means one of these around your neck in winter will probably leave you with the shivers. Instead, pick thicker materials that keep you warm and help you look super fashionable. The best winter scarf fabric is–you guessed it–wool. Thicker and usually closely knitted, it will chase away the chills. However, prepare to shell out a bit more for it because pure wool is expensive. If you don’t want to spend big bucks, woollen blends work almost as well. They also come in numerous colours and prints and go excellently with most winter outerwear, especially stylish coats and jackets. Choose a soft red scarf to peek out from under a fabulous top coat or a winter jacket. We recommend choosing warm leggings or wool blend trousers and boots for the finishing touch.

How to Style Scarf

Scarves can be worn all year round and are one of the few accessories that you can go all-out with. Let’s say you have a meeting to get to and want to spice things up without seeming too wild. Just pick a scarf in a fun design and it’ll jazz up your look like little else. Most women’s pantsuits could use a bit of oomph; a zebra print scarf would do the trick. Solid men’s business suits can be given terrific texture with a paisley print scarf. These and more come in several styles, all of which we love and recommend!

Bandana Style Scarf

Forget trying to shape a large scarf into a neat triangle; with the bandana style, a quick fold is all it takes. We love edgy designs that give voice to your inner rebel! Think graffiti prints, skull and bones, and multi-colours that accentuate any outfit. Tie a bandana style scarf around your head the next time you’re headed to a happening concert. Let it accessorise a fitted black jacket, skinny jeans, and ankle boots for the perfect rocker-inspired look.

Stole

If elegance is the need of the hour, nothing says it better than an elongated scarf or a stole. The large piece of fabric can be styled in a multitude of ways. Longer scarves look amazing with tunics, kurtis, and fitted tops. You can wear one with its ends hanging loose over your shoulders, or tie the ends together to create a cosy wrap. Shorter scarves can be worn with T-shirts and cropped tops for a fun and playful touch.

Infinity Scarf

A third style of scarf, known as the infinity scarf or more commonly as the snood, is our top pick for anyone looking to enhance casual and smart-casual wear. It can be looped around your neck to keep you warm or around your head for a slouchy beanie effect. Choose a vibrant printed snood to pep up a solid white T-shirt and ripped denim shorts for a spunky, casual style. You can also team up a dressier design with a tailored dress and a collarless jacket or with a light pullover and trousers.

Scarves are one of the easiest accessories to buy online. You don’t need to worry about size or fit. Just pick a design you like in a fabric to suit the season and you’re done. Get out that drab top that’s been gathering dust in your wardrobe and watch it come alive with a stylish scarf. Give conventional business attire a much needed edge with a printed chiffon scarf in rich maroon. Stock up on different styles from our gorgeous selection and discover the fun of accessorizing. Buy scarves and let them weave their magic.

Silk Scarves

With historical significance attached to them, silk scarves are easily one of the most opulent wardrobe items to own. There was a time when they were worn to denote ranks in society, with only upper classes flaunting them. Now, the entire dynamic has changed and they’re more of a symbol of fine taste in fashion than anything else. It’s impossible to watch a movie with the elite in focus and not spot these types of scarves on any of the characters. Whether they’re in the form of a necktie or stole, their icon status is never up for debate.

  • Just like cashmere, investing in a silk scarf can cause a dent in your wallet, but if you’re someone who enjoys the finer things in life, then you’ll find that they bring you immense joy and also put you high up on the style ladder! Always buy ones from trusted brands though, you don’t want to be stuck with a blend.
  • They’re good for your skin and for your body, so that’s a bonus and the right motivation to get yourselves at least one. We’re all for printed silk scarves but you can give into your favorite solids. We’re also suckers for the luster, and we know that you will be too.
Now, having learnt about the various types of scarfs and the seasons they best suit in, let us proceed to discuss the ways in which one can tie a scarf -

Interesting Ways to Tie a Scarf

There are myriad ways to tie a scarf around your neck for the best effect. You can style the scarf into different shapes employing a variety of knots and loops. With the help of one of one of the many online tutorials that abound, you can create chic twists, braids, ‘necklaces’, shawls and wraps without much effort.

In addition to a simple loop whereby you double the scarf and hang it around your neck, pulling both ends through the “loop” in the front, here are a couple of other easy styles to get you started:

  • ‘Pretzel’ Loop – As a variation on the simple loop above, double the scarf and wrap it around your neck. This time rather than pulling both ends through the loop, only pull one end through the inside of the loop and pull the other end over the loop and through the other side.
  • Simple Knot – Hang the scarf around your neck. Tie a knot near one end of the scarf and pull the other end through the knot, making it even with the knotted end.

Depending on the shape of your head and neck and your hairstyle, these different styles can be more or less flattering. And the heft of the scarf should relate to the rest of your outfit. For example, wearing a bulky, intricately tied scarf with a skimpy summer outfit would look unbalanced.

So go ahead and wear that gorgeous scarf that looks so pretty against your face, and don’t worry about matching it to the rest of your outfit. Or, rather than trying to match a scarf to your outfit, maybe you want to match your outfit to your scarf!

Spoiler Alert: a Woman's Scarf Doesn’t Have to Match

Many of us have been brought up to believe there are rules against mixing and matching certain colours and patterns. These rules can hinder us, especially when it comes to choosing a scarf to perk up a dress, a top, or an entire outfit.

Some of us feel a pang of anxiety doing something so seemingly simple as figuring out what scarf to wear with a black or camel coat or jacket.

We’re happy to report those old-fashioned rules no longer apply. You can mix non-complementary colours and patterns with impunity. So go ahead and choose that beautiful scarf you’ve been admiring. We have some recommendations to help you make it work so you look your best.

Your Scarf Should Flatter Your Face

The most important consideration when choosing a womens scarf to wear around your neck or on your head, is whether it flatters your face. That means choosing colours and patterns that complement your skin tone and hair colour. The good news is that choosing the right scarf lets you wear an outfit in colours that don’t normally suit you.

For example, if you long to wear black to achieve a chic look, but don’t because you believe black makes you look pale and washed out, go ahead and pair that cute black dress or other outfit with a scarf in your special colour(s) – and you’ll end up looking fabulous.

It’s the colour next to your face that makes the ensemble work. For a huge selection of different colours where you can choose your favourite, have a look at our Linen Scarf with Textured Finish – which is available in a huge selection of 28 different colours.

Women's Jackets: The complete buying guide

Author of this post - Sanskriti Kapoor

A great jacket can make any outfit stand out, and wear well for year after year, through all seasons...

A classic blazer is one of the essentials in your wardrobe; there are never too many occasions to wear it! If you choose a classic colour or pattern, it can be used to dress up/dress down many other garments in your wardrobe. To enhance your silhouette, make sure you choose a modern cut suitable for your shape and made of a good quality fabric. If you are on a budget, remember that you can always find great second-hand or vintage pieces in charity shops.

Material matters

If you want to maximize the life of your jacket, pay close attention to the main fabric it is made from. Wool is definitely the best material for all year-round use, providing the most durable option and best properties overall. Beautiful tweeds are timeless and regularly come back in fashion. For warmer months, you may prefer cotton or linen, and choose an unlined garment. If you choose a fitted jacket, it is best to select a fabric that is slightly stretchy.

Style matters

Single breast jackets usually suit women’s body types better than double-breasted jackets. For a more elegant look, some tailored jackets and blazers come with very discrete fastenings, or no fastenings at all (when designed to be worn open). Choose a contemporary style with a fitted waist that will enhance your silhouette. The classic blazer will have welt front pockets, as well as a chest pocket. If you’re after a more casual look, choose a blazer with narrow lapels and collar. Remember to check trims and the inside of the blazer to see the quality of seams and lining used.

Colour code

Plain coloured blazers and jackets are always easier to pair with other garments than printed or patterned ones. The most versatile blazers come in plain classic colours such as black, grey or navy. However bold colours can work well too (depending on your wardrobe’s colour palette!). If you prefer a pattern, choose traditional ones, some of which also come in brighter colours. Some jacket linings are also interesting, coming in lovely colours and prints.

Why Choosing A Great Jacket Is important For Your Style

A coat can set your style mood or even pull your look together on a day that you don’t really feel like dressing up so much. A good coat will also make an entrance and leave an impression. Plus, you will wear it many times over the season. Enough good reasons to buy a really good one! Let’s explore how to choose a coat and select the right one for your style! Below Are My Suggestions For A Ladies Winter Coats Wardrobe:-

1. One Regular Coat That You Wear During The Day

This would be your most regularly worn coat. When thinking about the best winter coats for women to choose from, this coat should be your priority. The ideal length would be around knee-height or mid-thigh. You can choose a casual coat or something dressier, depending on your style personality.

2. A Super Chic, Versatile Coat

When thinking about the best winter coats for women, choose a coat that will be your go-to to wear over evening wear, or for dressy occasions. You could think about a shorter faux fur coat, for example (which you could also wear with jeans) or you could choose a swing coat to follow the lines of your dress.

3. Best Winter Coats For Women: A More Casual Coat

Look for a coat which will be more casual for the weekends. This will be perfect for weekend strolls. Usually, this one will be shorter.

4. A Warm Parka Or Short Pea Coat

This could give your wardrobe extra flexibility and would look great worn with jeans. This one will be great when heading out for walks or running errands.

Now, having learnt about the points to keep in mind when choosing a jacket, here I am sharing some tips that would help you figure out and assist in making an informed purchase. They will certainly help you in buying just the perfect jacket for yourself:-

  • The first and the most important thing that you will have to keep in mind is why you are buying the jacket. what exactly do you need it for? it is very important for you to know why you need the jacket. If you want it for the winter months, then you should opt for heavy coats like parkas and snow jackets. You can also go with knitted jackets and woolen jackets. so, depending on the purpose you need to buy the jacket.
  • The next important thing that you need to keep in mind is the quality, i.e., the material that the jacket is made up of. you need to make sure that it is of good quality and that is made up of material that will not only protect you from the cold but also last long. Jackets are expensive, but it is important that you spend once so that you have something that will last long.
  • Another thing that you need to take note of is the brand. If the brand is a good one, then there are high chances that the jacket that you buy will also be of good quality, and it will come with the assurance of the brand which in itself will lend a certain character to the jacket and its credibility.
  • Always check the length and the cut of the jacket. it should complement your body type, and it should also protect you from the winters. so, no matter what you must make sure that it not only looks fashionable, but it should also be warm.
  • Finally, make sure that you have a fixed budget for your jacket. jackets are quite expensive and hence keep a budget handy based on which you should make the purchase or else you might end up spending much more than you intended.

So, these are some of the most important and basic tips that you need to keep in mind when it comes to buying just the right jacket for yourself!

When it comes to the best winter coats, there are a lot of things to consider. Before you make your way to our upcoming Winter + Ski Sale to grab your gear, check out our breakdown of the different types to help you make the best choice for this winter:
Hardshell
A hardshell is an uninsulated and usually hooded jacket that is arguably the most versatile jacket for any activity that might include snow or possible rain. Usually these will be waterproof and wind resistant to make them a comfortable choice for sports during the mild winter. The level of waterproofing and seam taping (which keeps moisture out) will help determine the pricing of the jacket. For example, a Gore-Tex material, which is awesome for keeping you dry, is going to run higher price wise. Regardless of what level of waterproofing you decide, we recommend choosing a shell that has room to layer a half-zip or even a filled jacket underneath to make it work for colder days.
Softshell
A softshell jacket is going to be the more breathable option, but usually will be water resistant as opposed to waterproof like a hardshell. The easy way to tell the difference between the two is the sound. A hardshell will typically be crinkly and more stiff, while a softshell will be quieter since the fabric is softer. A softshell jacket is designed to be stretchier and keep you cooler when you’re being active. Usually a softshell will also include a soft inner lining or fleece lining to keep you warmer. We recommend these for a mid-layer for cold winter activities or for just winter everyday wear. Although these are a great option for any dry weather outdoor activity, they are less packable, lightweight and waterproof than a hardshell.

Here, I am mentioning some of the Jackets that fits almost all the above parameters. In my experience as a fashion designer, I have come to find the designs mentioned below to be in trend these days. You may take a look -

Women's Jeans: The complete buying guide

Author of this post - Sanskriti Kapoor

Jeans are a wardrobe mainstay, and there are tons of options to consider when choosing a new pair. But lots of options means lots of decisions to make, and sometimes those choices can be overwhelming. Enter our denim experts! These aficionados cover all types of jeans, share their favorite styles and fits and offer tips on how to find the best-fitting jeans for your body type. Their insider advice will have you shopping for jeans like a pro in no time.

You may have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find that one perfect Prince and the same goes for buying the right kind of jeans. Jeans shopping is always a challenge. Good jeans cost a lot and buying what everyone else is buying is the recipe for looking the worst. You will have to know some, try some and go out and buy some to get it right finally. Most of the people buy relaxed fit jeans with a mid-rise (the standard) and are happy with their purchase. But when it comes to other styles that suit their body shape particularly, they are confused. They are right to be confused, there are so many different styles.

This post may guide you in finding that perfect jeans that is comfortable and fitting and just right for you.

How to get the Fit right?

The most important things to look out for in a jeans are your waist and hip size (does the zip close comfortably without you sucking in the breath), the cut of the leg opening (depending on your body shape), length of the jeans (does it skim the top of your shoes) and the length of the rise and overall fit.

Measure yourself first. Using a flexible measuring tape, Measure around hips and waist (loosely). You need to measure the natural waist and low waist measurement (some jeans brands have this). Measure the inseam length (from crotch to down). You need to get a jeans which fit you where you are the largest. If it does not, the jeans is of no use to you.

Types of Jean Fits

  • Skinny Fit. We love skinny jeans for their universal appeal—anyone can wear them. Plus, the silhouette pairs effortlessly with so many styles of shoes and tops and can be worn for both work and play. If you're looking for a slimming effect, go for a dark wash. Interested in a more fashion-forward pair? A deconstructed style adds a little edge.
  • Flare Jeans. A bit of a nod to older, simpler times, flare jeans hug the waistline, but then flare out beyond the knees. They can range from the subtle flare to something designed to catch the eye. While flare jeans work for any figure, they’re particularly flattering on women with broader shoulders or narrow hips.
  • Relaxed Fit. Concerned that relaxed jeans are too casual to wear regularly? We're here to convince you that they can be very versatile. Once you've found a pair of jeans you like, there are two tricks to keeping the look polished and feminine: cuff or roll the hems to show off your ankles, and buy true to your size. Relaxed-fit jeans have that broken-in feeling built right in, so stick to your size for the best fit. Pair with heels or flats, a blouse or a tee—the possibilities are endless!
  • Cropped Jeans. Women's cropped jeans feature an inseam of 26" or shorter and typically stop about one to two inches above your ankle. Wear with heeled booties to give your look lift and to show off your ankles.
  • Ankle Jeans. Women's ankle jeans feature an inseam that measures 27"-29" and typically fall right at the ankle or just above. They're super versatile and easy to pair with just about any style of shoe.
  • Straight Fit. There are two primary types of straight jeans: fashion and classic. If you're looking for denim that stands out, a fashion-focused style is for you. We love a pair with unique front-and-center seams or a vintage-inspired fit designed to show off your curves. If you prefer a more streamlined style, go for a classic silhouette. Its clean lines make it easy to take from day to night—just swap out sneakers for stilettos and you're set for a dinner out with the girls or a date night with someone special.
Finding the Perfect Jean Rise

The measurement of your jeans' rise (front and back) affects the fit and overall look of your denim. Low, mid, high and ultrahigh—discover which rise of jeans is right for you.

  • Low Rise. Low-rise jeans feature a 5"-8" rise and typically land a few inches below your bellybutton. This rise is ideal for those with shorter torsos—there isn't as much fabric, so they're more comfortable for this body type.
  • Mid Rise. Mid-rise jeans measure 8"-9" and will hit right at your hips, about an inch below your bellybutton.
  • High Rise. The most flattering rise! Depending on your torso, women's high-rise jeans will sit right at your bellybutton or just below. Measuring 9.5"-10.5", the rise defines your waist and gives the illusion of longer legs.
  • Ultrahigh Rise. This rise delivers the same benefits as a high rise but measures just a touch higher at 11"-12" and hits right above your bellybutton.
Finding your Wash

Great news: When it comes to wash, it’s all blue skies for you—there’s really no wrong or right when it comes to wash—it’s all about your personal preferences. Generally speaking, darker washes are best for going dressy, and lighter washes are great for beachy vibes. But your blue (or black or grey or white…) up to you.

  • Dark Wash. A dark wash pair of jeans is universally appealing to all shapes & sizes (and wears over time like a dream). Look for dark blue and black washes to add to your collection. Make sure you know how to wash black jeans properly so they don’t end up fading.
  • Light to Medium Wash. We like to call this the workhorse wash. From day to night, summer to winter—it’s always appropriate. What’s a wash tip to keep in mind? The lighter the wash, the more casual the vibe. Pro tip: Look for a seriously faded wash and pair with a light neutral top for a monochromatic look.
  • Coloured Denim. Elevate a basic jean-and-tee look with a darker hue like burgundy or olive. Punchier colours are great for warmer months.

Now, having given a consideration to the types and classifications of Jeans, let us take a look at some important tips that may make your Jeans shopping experience a lot more fruitful -

Some Tips to go shopping for jeans

Some people go jeans shopping and find that one good pair with just that one little flaw – the rise may be way too low or way too high, the waistband could gap while it fits everywhere else, the length could make you look stocky and short, the cut of the leg is not to your liking, it could be too long, too short, too flared, too baggy, too tight, or whatever. If you end up like that, look more.

Do not buy with the intention of altering this one aspect – it does not work that way. You have to get it right as you take it out of the showroom. Get it right at the hips, waist, and leg length – if it is a minor issue like length you can alter it -may be the shop itself will do it for you. But major issues like an ill fitting waistband is not worth the trouble to alter it.

Important factors to take into consideration other than the above concerns are the quality of denim fabric it is made of, the strength of its stitching, the finishes done on it like distressing and washes done on it to make it what it is and of course the brand name.

Here, I am mentioning some of the Jeans that fits almost all the above parameters. In my experience as a fashion designer, I have come to find the designs mentioned below to be in trend these days. You may take a look -

A woman's guide to dressing well

Author of this post - Sanskriti Kapoor

It’s Friday night and you’re searching through your wardrobe to put together the right outfit, but you just can’t seem to find anything that matches. Sound familiar? This is the kind of struggle all women have, but things don’t have to be too complicated. You can make your life a lot easier with some clever fashion tips that allow you look your best in any occasions. You can adjust your choices based on your personal style, body type and personality, but most of these tips will work for any of woman out there.

Shopping for clothes can turn out to be a rewarding and relaxing activity or a daunting experience. It all depends on your attitude and approach. So as not to be disappointed in your purchases, you have to be careful and pay attention to little details and after eight years of being a fashion designer, I’ve seen how easily a woman can advance her shopping, image, and fashion skills. With that in mind, I’m sharing my best styling tips to getting your style un-stuck so can you feel even more like the confident, gorgeous, powerhouse woman you already are.

1. Know your measurements

Whether you're buying clothing off-the-rack or having it tailored, it's best to keep your exact proportions in mind. Use a tape measure and write down the exact numbers. Here are the measurements you should take:

  • Circumference of your head for hat sizing.
  • Upper arm for sleeves.
  • Neck, which is more important in men's clothing.
  • Widest or fullest part of your chest or bust.
  • Natural waistline.
  • Hips for women's clothing.
  • Inseam, which is the distance from your groin to the bottom of your ankle.

2. Know why you like it, to wear it

People that have incredible style are attuned to their tastes and effortlessly build a wardrobe out of them. They build a wardrobe out what feels right. By refining your understanding of why you like an item you'll have more success choosing the pieces that make you feel pulled together. The next time you like or don’t like an item of clothing (your own, a colleagues, in a store, etc) take note of why.

When we are attracted to or repelled by an item, there are details that make you go yay or nay. Regardless if it is the color, the pleats, the fabric, or the way it moves, it's your job to understand why you kinda love it or hate it. As you start paying attention to why you like something you'll notice patterns in your style preferences. These patterns are valuable information to dressing yourself smarter. Our awareness of why we are attracted to something is a tool in creating more of that in our lives.

3. Start broad, then edit.

Whether you’re shopping online or at a brick-and-mortar clothing store, add all the items you like to your shopping cart, then edit down your options from there. By bringing many pieces together, you’ll be better able to compare them and decide which ones you like. There are bound to be pieces that don’t work out and other pieces that surprise you. By branching out a little, you can find hidden gems.

4. Try bright colors in your accessories

Incorporating color is often a challenge for anyone who has stuck to wearing neutrals. Experimenting with bright shades in your accessories is a simple way to wear more color and find what you love. You can do this with just about anything: a bright bag, shoe, or earrings. It could be a scarf or a hair clip. It works because almost all bright colors pair back to a neutral effortlessly, removing any skepticism of how to match.

Apply it now: All neutral outfits + bold bright accessories = colorful style.

5. Make a list of items you already own

When considering a new item, make a mental list of the pieces from your closet you’ll be able to wear with it. Unless you’re building a brand-new wardrobe from scratch, you’ll probably want this new piece to play well with several items you already own. If a cardigan you’re coveting doesn’t work with any of the clothes you have at home, consider why that may be.

Are you trying to move your style in a different direction? If a piece doesn’t go with anything else you own, it may not be right for you. Of course, there are exceptions—statement pieces that work all on their own, or clothes for special occasions. When you get home, try on the piece with your other clothing. If it doesn’t work, return it.

6. Check how clothing looks from behind

This step is crucial in finding flattering clothes that a lot of people skip. A dress or a suit can look like a perfect fit from the front but terrible from behind.

  • If you have a phone with a front-facing camera, take it with you to the dressing room to check how the back of each garment looks on you. See if it looks baggy or too tight. Make sure that it is flattering on you, meaning it's not hugging the wrong curves and that it isn't showing anything it shouldn't.
  • After you check how your potential new garment looks on you from the front, turn around so that your back faces the fitting room mirror. Switch your phone to its front-facing camera mode and hold it in front of you, higher than your shoulder and tilted down slightly. You should be able to see your back's reflection in your phone's screen.
  • If your phone doesn't have a front-facing camera, bring a small hand or compact mirror when you go shopping instead.

7. Diversify your wardrobe

It’s easy to gravitate toward the same safe pieces. But there’s only so many black dresses or dark-wash denim jeans any one person needs. Having multiples of the same item can add unnecessary bulk to your closet, making it harder to get dressed. If you find something you like but already own something similar, ask yourself: Do I like this version better than what I currently have? How many of these do I really want? The answer usually isn’t more than two, except when it comes to your work uniform.

8. Add a belt

Adding a belt to your look is one of the easiest ways to make any outfit look more put-together. It's also a great trick for bringing balance to a look that otherwise might not work—like a long cashmere sweater and billowy midi skirt.
  • Classic. Whether it comes in black or in brown, the classic belt is a must-have in every woman’s wardrobe. This belt is a versatile piece that exceeds its practicality. With a simple design and buckle, the simplicity of this belt makes it adaptable to a gamut of occasions. This belt when in a good quality leather will add polish to your office separates and your denim.

  • Woven/Braided. Leather is the usual material of choice for this type of belt given its earthy style connotations. However, the ease with which this belt can be styled has made it an easy pick for fashionistas to cross over to style even their preppy looks. In my opinion, this belt looks best when worn over flowing tunic tops and maxi dresses as well as more polished pieces like pencil skirts and sheath dresses.

  • Statement. This belt is especially appropriate for evening occasions and can be relied upon to make a major impression. From a belt that sparkles for the glam queens, to a studded belt if you’re more of a rock chick and an animal print if you’re a dramatic gal, the choices are endless. The key here is to find a style that resonates with your style so you can wear it with confidence.

  • Skinny. Skinny belts are subtle accessories that can easily spruce up your outfit and make it look complete. It’s also easier to play around with colorful hues and bolder prints since it’s width makes it understated. When styling this belt take note of proportion since the belt is so skinny wear it with jeans or skirts that are more fitted. Loose and flowing pieces will drown out the belt and it will lose its chic appeal.
